As a current college student, Third Year, I’ve heard my fair share of excuses as to why assignments and projects are late or get handed in half done. When I was in high school I taught at an elementary school as a Visual Arts Teacher for five months, and ran into the same problem with the students there. These kids are ten, eleven, twelve. How can they have the same time issues as college students?

I was a little baffled, but they dished out every excuse or reason they could think of.

My favourite is “I DON’T HAVE TIME”.

What does that even mean? Everyone has time. We all have the same 24 hours in every day.

Ultimately I believe it’s how you USE that time. That’s what’s important.

Firstly, take a step back and ask yourself this:

How much time do you spend on time wasters each day? (Social media, video games, procrastination)

How much time are you sleeping?

Are you making the most of the time you’re awake?

Like I said before, everyone has the same 24 hours in every day. Ultimately, I believe that it’s less about not having time, but people not making the time.

Now, I completely understand (I’m in the same situation myself) that we have school, work, other commitments that need our attention. There’s a lot of shit to do. This much is obvious, but also true for a lot of people and a lot of people can make it work, then push the envelope even farther ahead and do more.

I’m in college. Apart from class time, our studio projects and other assignments add up close to 40+ hours of work each week.  I also work at the college, typically 12-15 hours a week. I can still make it to the gym each day. I can still make it to classes on time and hand everything in on time. So, what’s the difference here? It’s as simple as how you structure your day. You know you’ve got shit to do, so why wouldn’t you make the time to do it so you can finish? And still be proud of it at the end.

If you break it down simply:

7 hours of sleep.

2 hours at the gym.

8 hours at work, class, commitments.

That adds up to 17 hours.

Which leaves you with 7 more hours to do whatever the hell you want.

So don’t for one second think…

I DON’T HAVE TIME.

Yes you do.

Make time.
